What Is Behind That Strange Noise Coming From Your HVAC System?

One of the most noticeable signs that you will have that your HVAC system is in need of service is the sound it makes. Your system will make the occasional sound, but persistent strange noises should be investigated. If your system is making noise, here is what you need to know.

What Is Causing the Noise?

The reason for the noise depends largely on what type of sound your HVAC system is making. For instance, if you hear a banging noise, it could be the result of a loose part, such as the piston pin or connecting rod. There is even the possibility that your indoor blower needs to be cleaned or balanced.

A clicking noise might seem like a normal sound, but persistent clicking could be a sign that there is an electrical issue. For instance, the thermostat could be on the verge of failing. It could also indicate a wiring issue that could impact how well the entire system operates in the future.

Hissing is commonly the result of a refrigerant leak. Leaking refrigerant can mean that your HVAC system is not cooling your home as it should. The lack of refrigerant can also cause the condensation coils to freeze over, which essentially ends any chances of the system cooling your home until the ice has melted.

Whistling is not just the wind blowing through your home. It can be a sign that the ductwork has a leak. As the wind creeps out of the cracks and openings in the ductwork, it can produce a whistling sound due to the forcefulness with which it is pushed out.

What Can You Do?

Before calling for assistance, there are some basic troubleshooting steps you can take to possibly stop the noises coming from your HVAC system. One of the first steps you can take is to check your system's air filter. A dirty air filter will not only exacerbate strange noises, but it can cause your energy costs to skyrocket.

You can also inspect your ductwork for signs of openings. Openings can be repaired using duct tape or a ductwork kit that you can find at your local home improvement store. While repairing the ductwork, look for signs of obstruction, such as small toys. Any obstructions you find need to be removed before turning your HVAC system back on.

If the strange noises continue, call your HVAC contractor for an inspection of your system.
