Getting Your Air Conditioning Unit Ready For Summer Use

If you have an air conditioning unit in your sleeping quarters to aid in keeping you comfortable during warmer temperatures, chances are you wish for it to work to its maximum efficiency level to help save money on energy costs. There are several steps you should take before you turn on your unit for the summer time so it works its absolute best. Here are some tips you can use to prepare your air conditioner for a season of use.

Do A Complete Clean Out Of The Unit

It is best to use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristled brush attachment to remove any debris that may have settled inside of your air conditioning unit if you had left it in your window throughout the cooler season. If you have a cover on your unit, remove it and vacuum it completely before storing it for the rest of the summer. Use the vacuum to remove dirt and possible pest nesting material from between the slats along the exterior portion of the unit. It is also a good idea to clean the interior of the inside portion of the unit as well as debris may have settled inside during its downtime. Use a piece of microfiber cloth dipped in water to remove any grime from the coils so they work well at cooling your bedroom.

Change The Air Filter To Ensure Great Air Flow

Your air conditioning unit's filter should be changed regularly to aid in the amount of air flow you obtain. A dirty air filter will make it harder for air to pass through the unit into your room. It could also distribute material trapped within the filter into your living space. Take the time to take out the air filter and swap it with a new one. If your unit has a washable filter, remove it and soak it for several minutes so dirt becomes dislodged from the crevices. Allow to air dry before returning into place.

Take A Look At Your Room For Air Restrictions

Before you use your air conditioner for the season, do an inspection of the room you will be cooling for any items that may restrict air flow. Drapes or curtains hanging in front of your unit will trap cooler air near your window instead of having it distributed throughout your room. Large furniture should be kept far from your unit so the air will push out into the central area of your room without difficulty.

Inspect The Condition Of The Wiring Before Powering On

Make sure the wiring that powers your unit is free of any damage before you plug it into a wall outlet. If a pet or pest had gnawed upon the wire, or if it had become pinched underneath a piece of furniture or inside a door jamb area, it may not be in workable condition. It is best to call an air conditioning specialist to take a look at the unit in this case so you do not put your home at risk for an electrical fire.
