Five Reasons to Clean Your HVAC Vents

The state of the air ducts is unknown in many households, particularly since you can't easily look inside them. Dust, dirt, mold, and pollen can all collect inside the ducts. Warm air in winter can lead to quicker growth of some pollutants in the ducts, like mold, which can have a major impact on your home's air quality. Duct cleaning can help, especially if you have any of the five following issues in your house.

1. New Home Purchase

If you only recently purchased your home, then vent cleaning is a good idea. You don't really know how well maintained the ducts were or what could be down in them. A vent cleaning combined with a camera inspection will locate problems like mold and air leaks so they can be repaired. With the cleaning, you can also be assured that only clean air is circulating throughout the home.

2. Family Pets

Pets add a lot to your family, but the excess fur from shedding is one addition you can likely do without. This fur often ends up in your ducts, even if you have good filtration installed on your HVAC unit. If you have pets, particularly heavy shedders, annual duct cleaning can clear the air and prolong the life of your HVAC system.

3. Certain Health Conditions

Some people are more sensitive to air quality issues, particularly to the presence of dust mites or mold spores. If you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies or a respiratory illness, such as COPD, then duct cleaning is a  must. Not only does cleaning remove dust and mold, but it also ensures that there is no pollen hiding in the ducts

4. Recent Construction

Construction produces a lot of dust by its very nature. Drywall dust and sawdust, for example, can easily get into your duct system during a construction or remodeling project. Once the work is done, plan to have the ducts cleaned out. This way you can have the debris removed before it circulates through your entire house.

5. Dirt Roads

Living in the country is nice, but chances are you have dirt roads and possibly even a dirt driveway to contend with. The dust kicked up on these roads usually makes its way into the house, especially in summer if you leave windows open. Plan to have the ducts cleaned each fall so you can get rid of all the dust that collects in the vents.
